Get closer! Tips for taking better photographs

Get Closer! This is something I say to my continuing education classes several times each class and critique. When you think you are close enough to your subject, take a few steps closer. Here are a few examples of photographs I have taken that improve dramatically the closer I got to the subject.

A Monrach Butterfly, October 2006

Same Monrach Butterfly, same surface, October 2006, several steps closer. The buttefly fills the frame and makes for a more interesting photograph.

Pre-wedding preparations, October 2008.

Same pre-wedding preparations, October 2008. While I like both of these photographs, this image provides a more focused view of what the bride's preparation was like. Overall, a superior photograph and the bride agreed!

Post wedding kiss, October 2008. This photograph was made on a suggestion from a guest. Although the bride and groom thought it was a fun photo (as do I) I was too far away to make a truly compelling image.

Same wedding, post wedding kiss, October 2008.This is a superior photograph comparatively simply due to my closeness (proximity) to the subject.

So, when you think you're as close to your subject as you need to be, get closer! Your pictures will improve dramatically!
